We know the correlations between behavior and social-emotional learning (SEL); students with higher SEL skills, such as self-management and social awareness, tend to have fewer behavioral incidents at school and greater capacity to focus on their education. Pandemic-era disruptions to teaching and learning, however, have created unforeseen challenges to the social-emotional health of our student body, with schools across the country experiencing surges in student misbehavior from disruptions in the classroom to fights in the hallway. In this webinar, we unpack the implications of this trend and address student (mis)behavior through the lens of SEL.

Watch an Expert Q&A to hear how district leaders at Boone County Schools (KY) and Tangipahoa Parish School District (LA) are navigating behavior in unprecedented times. Together, we will:

  • Identify common examples of and reasons behind the rise in behavioral incidents, particularly as they intersect with social-emotional learning
  • Explore frameworks for Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) and best practices for navigating behavior in a proactive, whole-child, and asset-based way
  • Apply an equity lens that unpacks the racial and gendered disparities in student discipline and draw implications for educator training and school-wide cultural change
  • Examine how data can be used to understand the broader context, identify patterns, and find solutions that prevent and support behavioral incidents
